2024 is set to be a busy year for trading card games, and Magic: The Gathering fans have a lot to look forward to already.
Ravnica Remastered, Murders At Karlov Manor, and the Fallout Universe Beyond are all on the horizon, but there’s one expansion on the way that’s got the community incredibly hyped up. It has a Western theme to it and it features some very iconic characters from the MTG franchise.
Here’s everything we know about Magic: The Gathering Outlaws Of Thunder Junction, including the release period and general set theme.
It Will Come Out In the First Half of 2024
There isn’t an exact release date available for Outlaws of Thunder Junction yet. However, we do know that it should be dropping in most locations in the second quarter next year.
If you’re unfamiliar, the second quarter generally means April, May, and June. It’s likely that we’ll see Outlaws of Thunder Junction in late April based on current set release patterns and the existing MTG 2024 release schedule.
Following the past release habits of Wizards of the Coast, we’re sure to see quite a few card reveals and spoilers roughly a week before the set drops. When you start to see a heavy influx of Thunder Junction cards popping up on Wizards of the Coast social media, you can be confident that the set won’t be too far behind.
Pre-release events should also be following the existing structure. Participating stores and retailers are sure to be hosting pre-release events and competitions roughly a week or so before the set comes out, too.
The Magic team is always great at generating plenty of hype around upcoming sets. It would be easy for this set to feel overshadowed by upcoming releases like Murders At Karlov Manor, but even with the limited amount of information that we have on offer, this release still feels immensely exciting.
The Theming Is Incredibly Cool
As mentioned earlier, Outlaws of Thunder Junction has a Western theme. Think rolling tumbleweeds, epic battles, and overly moody characters. Put emphasis on the last point, too- this themed set will be featuring some of the most iconic villains and fan favorite characters from the Magic franchise.
The characters that have been confirmed as being in the set so far include:
- Oko
- Radkos
- Tinybones
- Vraska
Based on the official artwork that’s been shown off so far, it seems safe to say that Oko will be the Planeswalker of this series.
If you’ve not heard of a Planeswalker before, they’re incredibly powerful characters within Magic: The Gathering that can hop between realms and always seem to end up in world-ending battles. In Magic, the original Planeswalkers are actually the players themselves, but this has changed with the arrival of Planeswalker cards.
Generally, there will only be one Planeswalker per set release. They’re incredibly powerful and have the ability to completely change the tide of battle, so it makes sense for them to be quite limited and rare.
Additionally, some new characters have been featured in the set artwork already and there are some obscured faces who could be new characters or existing ones. There’s already been a lot of speculation about who these characters may be on social media.
It’ll be exciting to see how the community responds to this set and the story that it’s telling. Western theming can often be quite divisive in trading card games – some people love it, some people hate it – but the official artwork that’s been shown already is epic and the existing line-up of characters is sure to be a hit.
