It’s been a great year for Magic fans and already there’s a lot to look forward to next year – including Play Boosters and sets like Ravnica Remastered – but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing left to get excited about in the final section of 2023.

Coming up in the final quarter of 2023, Magic fans can expect to see a main set release, a holiday release, and a Secret Lair drop. There’s bound to be other smaller releases and game accessory drops as we head into the holiday season, but those are the main three releases that we’ll be looking at here.

Here’s a release schedule for the final Magic: The Gathering releases in 2023.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Holiday Release

The initial Lord of the Rings MTG release this year came out in June (with some truly legendary cards), but there’s more to look forward to if you like this franchise. A holiday release for LotR: Tales of Middle-earth will be coming out in most locations on the 3rd of November this year.

This holiday release will include a number of interesting cards and items. The full release includes:

  • Collector Boosters. Collector Booster packs contain 15 cards. This includes a Land card, 4 Common cards, 5 Uncommon cards, and 5 cards of the Rare level of rarity or even higher.
  • Collector Booster Display Boxes. Collector Booster Display Boxes are ideal for collectors who want to get their hands on a good quantity of cards. They contain 12 Collector Booster packs overall.
  • Jumpstart Boosters. Jumpstart Boosters contain 20 different Magic cards, with essential competitive cards like Lands to get you started. They include 2 Rare cards and 2 Land cards in the Traditional Foil style. It’s important to note that Jumpstart Boosters do not contain Serialized Ring cards.
  • Jumpstart Booster Display Boxes. Jumpstart Booster Displays contain 18 Jumpstart Boosters, providing a pretty good pull rate overall.
  • Scene Boxes. Scene Boxes contain the following items:
      • A paper display easel
      • 3 Set Boosters
      • 6 Traditional Foil Borderless Scene cards
      • 6 Art cards

All in all, this is looking like a truly magical set and a worthwhile pick-up for collectors.

The Lost Caverns of Ixalan

The Lost Caverns of Ixalan is one of the most anxiously awaited Magic sets of the year- and with good reason. This set will be dropping in most locations on the 18th of November (with pre-sale events happening on the 10th of November) and it’s looking incredible so far.

One of the most notable things about The Lost Caverns of Ixalan is the Jurassic World characters and artistic inspirations.

It’s not purely a Jurassic World set, but there’s a chance to find iconic characters when opening Set Boosters and Collector Boosters. More specifically, Jurassic World cards are in 1 out of every 12 Set Boosters. There’s one in every Collector Booster, too.

The full product list is as follows:

  • Bundles. Bundles are ideal for new collectors. These particular bundles contain a Jurassic World collector’s card, a bundle-exclusive alternate art card in the Traditional Foil style, and 8 Set Boosters, alongside other items like unique dice.
  • Collector Boosters/Booster Displays. As noted above, Collector Boosters offer some great pull rates for Traditional Foils, Rares, Mythics, and character cards. Collector Booster Displays are also available for this release.
  • Commander Decks. Each Commander Deck contains 2 Foil Legendary cards, a Collector Booster Sample Pack with 2 cards, and 10 commander cards, alongside plenty of other intriguing MTG cards.
  • Draft Boosters/ Booster Displays. Draft Boosters come with 3 lots of 15 cards, and they’re ideal for building up new decks. Booster Display Boxes are available too, with 36 Boosters apiece and a Treasure Trove Artifact Box Topper card which has gorgeous borderless alternate art.
  • Gift Bundles. These are ideal for the holiday season, containing a Collector Booster, a Jurassic World Collection Traditional Foil card, 8 Set Boosters, and other items like a themed die.
  • Prerelease Packs. The name might give it away slightly, but prerelease packs can only be obtained at pre-sale events. They’re wonderful collector’s items, containing a Foil, year-stamped Rare/Mythic Rare card, a Spindown die, and 6 Draft Boosters.
  • Set Boosters/Booster Displays. Set Booster packs contain 12 cards with at least 1 Rare/Mythic Rare, a Shining Foil card, and the chance of pulling a Jurassic World card. Booster Display Boxes contain 30 Set Boosters and the aforementioned Treasure Trove Artifact Box Topper card with alt art.

As you can see, this is a big release and there’s a lot to look forward to. If you can get to a pre-sale event, it’s absolutely worth doing so- both for the prerelease packs and the community.

Calling All Hydra Heads

Finishing up the Magic schedule for 2023, Calling All Hydra Heads is a WPN exclusive Secret Lair drop. The artwork for this set looks incredible- although it hasn’t gone down incredibly well with some fans as the artist (CatDirty) is an NFT artist, which has proven to be controversial.

This set is small but mighty, with 5 cards to pick up and a Hydra-themed coin. It drops in most locations on the 8th of December this year.

It’s important to note that this is a WPN (Wizards Play Network) exclusive, so it may not be available in your usual Magic store. There have also been some supply constraints in Latin America and Asia-Pacific stores, with Japan being the only exception.
