Universus Rarity Guide

Universus CCG Rarity Explained

UniVersus is a unique trading card game that stands out due to its crossover nature, featuring a variety of anime franchises from Yuyu Hakusho to Cowboy Bebop to My Hero Academia.

This diversity, while charming, can make it challenging to understand the rarity and value of your cards. This guide is here to help you navigate the world of UniVersus card rarity, providing you with the knowledge you need to confidently assess your collection. Let’s dive in!

How Rarity Works in UniVersus

In UniVersus, the rarity of a card can be identified by examining the text at the bottom of the card.

The code, which indicates the rarity, is always the last letter or group of letters in the first line, following a fraction that represents the card’s individual number in the set.

For instance, you might find codes like UC 82/117 or R 20/180. The rarity symbols are as follows:

  • C: Common
  • UC: Uncommon
  • R: Rare
  • UR: Ultra Rare
  • SR: Secret Rare
  • XR/XSR: Xrtra Rare
  • CH: Character
Rarity R

In addition to these standard rarities, UniVersus also features special rarity types such as Promo cards and Starter Exclusive. These particular types are not found in random products:

  • SE: Starter Exclusive
  • P: Promo
  • BT: Box Toppers

Starter Exclusive cards are, as the name suggests, exclusive to starter packs.

Promo cards come from various places, and their rarity varies greatly.

Each box always includes a Box Topper card. Typically, sets only have one of these. In the case of My Hero Academia, it’s the Go Beyond card.

The Character rarity was first introduced during the MY HERO ACADEMIA COLLECTIBLE CARD GAME: Undaunted Raid set. From this set onward, all character-type cards are considered either CH or SE.

Rarity Composition of a UniVersus Booster

A typical booster box of UniVersus cards contains 24 booster packs. While they used to contain 10 cards each, newer packs come with 11 cards. The distribution of rarities in a booster is as follows:

  • 6 commons (C) cards
  • 3 uncommon (UC) cards (chance of (XR) replacing a (UC) slot)
  • 1 Foil Rare (R), Foil Ultra Rare (UR), or Foil Secret Rare (SR) card
  • 1 character (CH) card (Only in boosters with 11 cards)

The rarity distribution in UniVersus booster packs is generally the same across all their licenses.

Typically, each booster pack contains 6 commons, 3 uncommons, and 1 rare card. Booster packs with 11 cards come with a guaranteed character card.

Beginning with the Jet Burn expansion (released November 17, 2023), a new Alternate Art Character Rare will be available and this will take up the Character Rare slot in the booster pack. The odds of pulling an Alternate Art Character Rare is approximately 1 in 18 packs.

This appears to be the new standard for UniVersus moving forward. It started with the Undaunted Raid set and has been repeated for the Jet Burn set.

Some special collector boxes or packs may contain additional exclusives, and there may be slight variations in specific franchises or due to special promotions.

Checking the specific details for each set or franchise you’re interested in is always a good idea. You’ll often find all the information you need in the box.

Chrome Rares

The most sought-after chase card in Universus is a Chrome Rare. This is the highest possible rarity and many players have yet to ever see one in person.

Chrome Rares are still new, but members of the community believe the odds of pulling one are somewhere around 1 in 42 cases, which is equal to about 1 in 6,000 packs

In addition to this, Chrome Rares are serialized. This means that each card has a unique number stamped on it, such as “025/100”.

UniVersus or Universal Fighting System?

There’s no need to worry if your cards don’t have “UniVersus” written anywhere on them.

The rarity still works the same way for UFS cards. UniVersus is the new name given to Jasco’s Collectible Card Game. But that’s not all that changed. Jasco rebranded and is now called UVS Games.

The change from Universal Fighting System (UFS) to Universus is an elegant one. It made it much easier to remember and say the name of this CCG, and the change to UVS Games was made to make the company’s name match their cards.

It’s clear that UVS Games intends to continue introducing new franchises to their card game. They will probably keep the MHA CCG somewhat separate from the others since it has its own format. Yet, they do have other formats that allow interesting crossovers.

Either way, if you get confused by seeing UFS instead of UniVersus or Jasco instead of UVS Games, now you know why.

In the image below, you can see where the rarity symbol was before the game moved away from “UFS”.

How Much Are Rare UniVersus Cards Worth?

The value of UniVersus and UFS cards can vary depending on several factors, such as the card’s rarity, the set it belongs to, and its condition.

However, it’s fair to say that, although there are exceptions, UniVersus cards rarely cost more than 20 U.S. dollars.

For instance, in the My Hero Academia Collectible Card Game (MHACCG), an Extra Rare (XR) card like “All Might” can be worth around $11.21, while a card like “Calling for Backup” can be worth as much as $10.562. On the other hand, a common card like “20 Meter Tongue Strike” might only be worth $0.27.

In the Universal Fighting System Promos, some cards like “Fiddlestix (Champion Batch V Promo)” and “Judgment Day (Champion Batch V Promo)” can be worth around $7.00 and $12.00 respectively.

Final Thoughts

Understanding the rarity system in the UniVersus card game might help you know how much your cards are worth, but that’s not the most important thing here.

What really matters is that dopamine hit you will get when you see an XR on a card when opening a booster pack. UniVersus might not be the most popular TCG out there, but that doesn’t make playing or collecting its cards any less fun.

Besides, let’s be real: a card game with fighting game mechanics that lets you use Yusuke to beat up Izuki? I’m down!
