Topps Chrome MetaZoo Blaster Box Review

MetaZoo fans are very excited about the new Topps Chrome product released in April 2023. Exclusive to only Target in the US, the Topps Chrome Blaster Box is already caught after and scalpers are doing their thing on eBay. Luckily, we picked one up for a quick review. So here are our thoughts on the very first Topps Chrome MetaZoo Blaster Box.

What’s Inside?

The blaster Box (sometimes referred to as the Value Box) contains 4 packs, each containing 4 cards. That means you’ll get a total of 16 cards from this product. It doesn’t sound like a lot but these are Chrome cards, which means each one is a holofoil and these cards are printed on a very thick cardstock, so the quality of these cards is high.

Odds and Pull Rates

Topps Chrome cards are known for their fun pulls. This time around we’re getting X-Fractors that are exclusive to the Blaster Box. They are a lot of fun and easy to pull with the X-Fractor odds being 1:2, so you’re pretty much guaranteed to pull some. In our case, we got 3 out of the 4 packs.

Approximate odds per pack of finding (*Sequentially Numbered): Meta Zoo Base Set Parallels: X-Fractor 1:2, Refractor 1:2, *Green Refractor 1:19, *Gold Refractor 1:38, *Black Refractor 1:377, *SuperFractor 1:1,910; Lore Card 1:4; Lore Card Parallels: *Green Refractor 1:285, *Gold Refractor 1:565, *Black Refractor 1:5,531, *SuperFractor 1:26,729; Creator Card 1:161; Creator Card Parallels: *Black Refractor 1:17,820, *SuperFractor 1:80,186, Cryptid Camera Parallels: Cryptid Camera 1:24, *Green Refractor 1:87, *Gold Refractor 1:171, *Black Refractor 1:1,707, *SuperFractor 1:8,441; Battle Card 1:12; Battle Card Parallels: *Green Refractor 1:475, *Gold Refractor 1:944, *Black Refractor 1:9,434, *SuperFractor 1:40,093.

The official odds are also posted on the Topps website.

When you’re opening one of these, you’ll be hunting for the sequentially numbered cards. These are serialized with a unique number. For example, you might find a Mothman with “55/99” stamped on it, indicating that it is the 55th of only 99 stamped cards. Pretty cool!

Price

The cost of this Blaster Box is 19.99 USD, so you’re paying about $5 per pack. That being said, it’s a bit of a gamble if you’re going to break even. MetaZoo isn’t as big as sports cards or Pokémon, so you’re limited to those very rare pulls if you want to make a quick buck.

The cards that sell well are Mothman, Bigfoot, Steve Aoki, and any of the numbered cards. If you check the odds you’ll find some of the harder pulls such as Creator Card Black Superfractor, and these obviously sell for a good price on eBay since they are so rare.

Should You Keep Sealed?

In the collectibles world, anything 1st edition is often worth keeping sealed. In this case, the Topps Chrome MetaZoo cards are “Series 0”.

MetaZoo is still relatively new and many claim it has yet to hit its stride. We love MetaZoo but the truth is that it may or may not spike in popularity, and that’s just the reality of TCGs.

Since the price is only $20, this one might be worth hanging onto for a few years. They are already selling for above MSRP on eBay, so this could be a good indicator that they will gain value over the coming years.

UPDATE: I came back to update this article after the recent news that MetaZoo Games has officially shut down. So from that perspective, I would recommend keeping this product sealed if you have one.

I don’t think MetaZoo cards are going to be very valuable in the future, but a Topps product with a failed TCG collaboration could be. That’s just my opinion!

Where to Buy

The Topps Chrome MetaZoo Blaster Boxes are exclusive to Target in the US but can be found in multiple locations in Canada and the UK. If you want to purchase them in larger quantities, consider the Hobby Boxes, which contain 20 packs per box.

Keep in mind that the Blaster Box has exclusive X-Fractors and the Hobby Boxes have exclusive Orange Refractors.

Final Thoughts

The collaboration between MetaZoo and Topps Chrome will bring new attention to the MetaZoo TCG. For those of us who are interested in MetaZoo but are intimidated by the learning curve, these Chrome cards should help us ease into the new world of fun creatures.

In our opinion, we would definitely recommend purchasing a box of these if you find them at MSRP. They are such cool and fun cards to open, and who knows, you might be the one to pull a rare refractor!
