In his video caption, Trafton notes how utterly magic the experience was and how both Post Malone and Magic: The Gathering have changed his life forever.
It sold for a life-changing amount of money (well over $2 million) but the experience must have been life-changing, too.
It’s certainly one of the most uplifting and emotional stories to come out of the trading card game world in recent years, and watching the video will bring out a sense of pride in most collectors. It’s no wonder that this story has received so much attention so far.
What Could the One Ring Purchase Mean for Trading Cards?
The One Ring purchase has had a lot of press so far, thanks in part to Post Malone’s fame and the sheer rarity of the One Ring card. It’s also a genuinely heartwarming story of a fan getting a real reward for his dedication and love for the game, which makes for a fantastic read.
Notably, this story has received a lot of press from outlets that might not usually talk about trading card news. For example, this story was seen on Forbes, which is a gigantic publication that mostly focuses on business, finance, and technology-related stories. Other than this story and a One Ring reveal post, trading cards rarely show up in their work.
Magic: The Gathering isn’t a small franchise by any way or means, but this extra attention and love for the cards could get even more people than usual to check out trading cards and start playing the game for the first time.
Local stores could set up some LotR-themed tournaments or events for beginners to make the most out of the extra hype.
