Back in February 2023, the Pokémon TCG Classic product was announced by The Pokémon Company International with a teaser trailer. The trailer is brief but our in-depth analysis revealed a handful of details.
You can view the trailer here.
It’s coming in November
That’s right, today we were given a planned release date of November 17th.
This is obviously planned to be a holiday purchase for the whole family, given the product’s nature. The cards included are not tournament-legal, and not meant to be used outside the Classic TCG game itself.
The product is meant to emulate the classic Pokémon TCG from 1999 and features 3 pre-built decks.
This is what comes with the new product:
- A foldable, portable two-player game board complete with card placement zones for your Active Pokémon, Benched Pokémon, deck, discard pile, and Prize cards.
- 3 preconstructed decks, each featuring either Venusaur (Grass), Charizard (Fire), or Blastoise (Water).
- 3 Deck boxes with Energy symbols to match each deck.
- Newly designed stackable damage counters.
- 3D poison and burn markers.
- Newly designed glass orbs to replace the coin toss mechanic.
It’s going to cost a lot
The MSRP for this product is $399.99 USD. Fans are shocked at the price of this product because we have yet to see a Pokémon product this expensive before.
For those of us in Canada, this is going to cost $500+ CAD.
Plenty of members of the community are saying “No thank you” this time around. This is a good idea since some of the unique cards included have already been confirmed to be released later as promos.
You can pre-order it right now
Also announced today was the presale of the Pokémon TCG Classic. Check the Pokémon Center periodically to see if it is available because it sold out pretty fast.
It was also listed on Gamestop, so you can check there for availability, too.
For those of us who just want the Base Set reprints, we may be out of luck. This product might be hard for scalpers to move, which means prices may not be too high. But that doesn’t matter if you’re not even willing to pay the $399 price tag.
The product itself is useless without the Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard combo, so it will be hard to find the cards on the secondary market.
