Pokémon GX cards have now come and gone, and are highly collectible. There are some highly valuable first generation bangers such as Charizard or Mewtwo, but also some surprising hits like Lucario or Lunala. Prices will only go up over time, so now might be the time to purchase some packs and rip ‘em. But which packs contain GX cards? Let’s find out!
Any booster pack with the Pokémon Sun & Moon logo on the front may contain GX cards, in addition to Shining Legends, Dragon Majesty, and Hidden Fates.
What is a GX card?
Pokémon GX cards are a type of Pokémon with boosted Attack and HP stats. They are not unlike their predecessor Pokémon-EX cards. The main mechanic behind the GX cards when it comes to the TCG is their GX Attack, which may only be used once per game. These are powerful attacks, and the player would use a special GX marker to indicate the use of the attack.
GX cards are sought-after and not commonly pulled from booster packs. In addition to their rarity, GX cards often feature beautiful artwork that spans the entirety of the card. Many of the GX cards have full art, rainbow, or alternate art variants.
Tag Team Pokémon GX cards
When the Team Up expansion was released on February 1st 2019, new GX cards were introduced. Tag Team Pokémon GX cards featured two or three Pokémon instead of one.
These cards had a higher HP stat and an additional attack bonus if the card had extra energy attached when attacking. These are very popular cards among collectors due to the exceptional artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita.
Which booster packs contain GX cards?
GX cards were first introduced with the Sun & Moon expansion, in 2017 (North America) and 2016 (Japan). Each new era of Pokémon cards introduces a new game mechanic, and GX cards were exactly that for the Sun & Moon era. When Sword & Shield was released in 2020, the TCG moved away from GX cards and onto the new V card mechanic.
Any booster pack from the Sun & Moon era of the TCG will have a chance to contain GX cards.

How much are GX cards worth?
Pokémon GX cards were printed during a three-year window, meaning there are a lot of GX cards to collect. For this reason, there are many GX cards worth less than $1, some worth over $100, and many in between.
For a GX card to be worth the most, it must be in near-mint condition and be graded. This can often boost the value by +200%.
The most expensive GX cards
The most expensive Pokémon GX card to date is Charizard GX from Sun & Moon- Hidden Fates Shiny Vault. A perfect 10 copy of this card graded by BGS sold recently for $5,000.00.
It’s not too surprising that the second most expensive is also a Charizard. Charizard GX from Sun & Moon- Burning Shadows. A PSA 10 gem mint copy recently sold for $3,500.00.
Final thoughts
Even though GX cards are out of print, they aren’t hard to get a hold of… yet. Of course, opening booster packs are taking a risk, but worth it if you get the pull. If you’re purchasing GX boosters to keep them sealed, you may have a high return in a few years when they become more sought-after.
