It’s always great to see a company in charge of a trading card game that cares about establishing a strong competitive community of players. Community is the reason why a fair amount of TCG fans get into the hobby, after all, so tournaments, fan events, and dedicated competitions are always wonderful to see.
Disney and Ravensburger have made it clear that they want Lorcana to have a bustling competitive community, and they recently made some announcements about what will be happening in 2024 in terms of fan events.
Here’s what you need to know about the Lorcana competitive scene in 2024.
Official Tournament Rules Are Already Available Online
Firstly, tournaments have already been taking place in the Lorcana scene, being led by fans and local stores. These tournaments have proven to be very popular already, and they have been using official rules set out by the Lorcana website.
On the Lorcana website, there’s a brief Organized Play section which discusses what Lorcana Play is and how players can earn League Points.
Lorcana Play, much like Play! Pokémon, is just the formal name given to Lorcana competitive play and events. League Points are earned by playing Lorcana (it doesn’t matter whether you win or lose), bringing new players to events, and teaching people how to play.
There’s also a section for retailers, describing how to obtain tournament materials and promo items for their players. Official League tournament seasons last around 12 weeks.
While it’s likely that we’ll see some alterations to the official rules and setup for competitive Lorcana, it’s unlikely that we’ll see dramatic changes to what we’ve listed above. It’s worth checking out the official site and reading up on the Lorcana Play information if you’re planning to get involved in an event.
Events Will Start Happening In the Second Quarter
All of the competitive Lorcana event news items were announced via the official Disney Lorcana Twitter page, alongside notes about an updated restock date and changes to how players can obtain promotional items.
The most important things to take away from the Twitter thread are that:
- Official fan events and competitive tournaments will begin happening in the second quarter of 2024, meaning April to June.
- More specific announcements about the tournament circuit and other fan events will be announced in January.
It’s interesting to see in the thread that there will also be plenty of events for fans who do not play competitively or have no interest in taking part in tournaments. It’s currently unsure what these Disney-led fan events might look like, but they could be swap meets, card reveals, or even dedicated conventions.
All things considered, it’s a brilliant time to get into Lorcana if you’ve not started playing it yet. The game is fun and light-hearted, with brilliant artwork too. It’s decently accessible for new players but there’s still plenty of challenge to be had for experienced TCG fans.
